A Better “War on Drugs” Perhaps?

Have you ever asked yourself why there are so many more people taking medications and living with ailments than there were when you were younger? I find it to be crazy, myself! When I think back to the subdivision I grew up in, how large it was and how many people lived within it, I remember there were very few residents that were “suffering” from a labeled ailment or disease. There was one girl in that entire hood that dealt with epilepsy and only a handful that had organ disease issues in the family. Nowadays, it’s pretty difficult to live in a neighborhood where that holds true anymore.

I’m dumbfounded at the vast numbers of people that truly believe they have no other choice than to swallow some sort of prescription medication to “cure” or help heal what these poor souls have been told they suffer from. When my children were in the local school system, I was shocked when administrators/teachers informed me of the percentage of students attending school that were taking some sort of medication daily. I could not believe what I was hearing, honestly, over 80% of them, really? Our kids are so doped up, it’s any wonder they’re having difficulty with so much.

Think back to the days of peace, love and choice. I was born in the late 50’s and grew up through the 60’s, 70’s and so on. People actually cooked dinner and didn’t toss a box or package into a microwave to feed the family. There weren’t as many isles at grocery stores flooded with “prepared” foods full of chemicals and ingredients you couldn’t even pronounce. Yep, things were certainly different then. Farming was an honorable business and was well respected. My grandparents raised 7 children on one in Canada. They cooked breakfast eggs in the bacon grease, used hand-made butter on their toast and made ice-cream with real cream. Now, it’s a big deal on packaging to label things “simple”, with ingredients that you can actually pronounce.

Ask yourself this, if you don’t want to “zap” your body, why on earth would you want to zap your food and then consume it? Is it because it’s quicker, easier and more convenient? Well, I guess if this is your answer, then you will have to sacrifice something for that. If putting unpronounceable chemicals into the food supply makes it quicker to get to the next game, dance class, whatever, then I guess you may not mind. I know I do. Have you really ever looked at the ingredients in most of the items specifically for kid’s lunchboxes? You could eat an entire bag of regular potato chips and not consume that much salt! It’s not just the salt either, take a good look at those snacks, cupcakes, etc. that you’re packing for them. Do you really want them eating these things? What are they munching on when they get home, waiting for you to make dinner? Is it another “toss it into the microwave on high for 3 minutes” snack?

When is our society going to say “enough is enough” to anything? How many generations is it going to take to clean up some of the mess that has been made for the sake of “convenience”? Why is it so easy for you to believe you have no other choice than to swallow a pill to help improve your health? Why are so many people too lazy to look for natural alternatives instead? Your body can heal itself, seriously. Our creator did an incredible job at creating mankind and placing living things on our planet that would help keep us healthy and help “fix” what ails us, when we need it, all you need to do is a little research. For example, did you know there are about 18 spices that help cure cancer? Yes, spices! It truly is amazing what you can do to help your health, naturally, rather than to fall victim to the pharmaceutical industry telling you that you need a pill to help yourself.

When I go grocery shopping, I am able to skip a majority of the isles because I am selective in my choices. I have not owned a microwave for at least 5 years, only using it to melt chocolate or heat my coffee anyway. I never cared to cook food with one. It’s not just the microwaveable foods either, it a majority of our supply. I started involving my kids at age 2 in the grocery shopping experience. They were very aware of the make-up of the popular foods and what they contained that so many other kids had in their lunchboxes. They knew why we didn’t buy those. Yes they tried them, but they found home-made was better and more fun. We created our own things like “rollercoasters” that you could put together and dip for lunch that were very good. Involve kids into creating their own foods and they’ll appreciate what they’re eating more. Imagination and creativity goes a long way here. My banana “sundaes” never had ice-cream in them but the kids loved them! They looked like normal ice-cream sundaes, but weren’t. Presentation is key, people. Make it appealing, make it taste good and they will eat it. Most importantly, make it real.

Just thinking about how many of our children are on some sort of medication, I could go on about this topic for a long time. I will definitely be writing about this more.

    1. You were a beautiful, imaginative & curious child. You loved to explore, engage & create. I would never want to destroy those natural, wonderful traits of innocence with any form of pharmaceuticals. You & your brother never needed pills to be manipulated or controlled. You were everything a child is supposed to be. I started drinking coffee then, just so I could keep up with you both! I thank YOU for making my world so magical!! ~xOx~ 💖
